Coming to YouTubeBuild 12 · One sprite, eight directions
An 8-direction pixel art character, built in Aseprite
A heron-headed swordsman with a straw hat, a red scarf and a katana. Five moves in every direction, all drawn (none mirrored, so the sword stays in the right hand), in one 64×64 file a game can load as is.

What makes it work
Inside the file
- One row per direction: S, SW, W, NW, N, NE, E, SE.
- The sword is split by depth across two layers, so it passes behind the body and the hands close over the hilt.
- Attack tags carry their active frames and hitbox; walk tags carry the speed that keeps the feet planted.
- 48 tags and 10 slices, including a pivot and a hurtbox.
How it was built
Step by step
- DesignEvery frame was posed on a 3D-shape rig and rendered to 1× pixels before the build.
- BuildStep by step through SpriteRelay CLI, each step exported and compared with the design.
- ExportsThe sheet with JSON, layer sheets and 40 GIFs, all compared with the design.

Read from each file's own record (SpriteRelay's file summary of the final .aseprite where one was taken).
How it was checked
- Every build step and every export matches the design pixel for pixel.
- Feet stay planted at the walk speed stored in each walk tag.
Labels and honesty notes
- The courtyard and straw dummy in the videos and the browser demo are props drawn for them.
- The 'how a frame is made' views in the video are the design before the build, and are labelled that way.
