Build 04 · Build a tiny game world

A pixel art platformer kit: tileset, hero, enemies and a boss

A small side-view platformer world in five episodes: the tileset and a level, then a hero, enemies, items and a boss. Everything shares one palette, so it all belongs together.

This player reads the exported sheet and its JSON: frame rectangles, timings and tags, exactly as a game engine would.

What makes it work

Inside the file

  • A real Aseprite tileset of 27 tiles, and a level painted on two tilemap layers.
  • A knight with Idle, Run, Jump, Attack and Hurt; a slime, a mushroom and a flying eye.
  • Pickups with Idle and Collect tags, and a stone golem boss that crumbles to rubble.
  • Each enemy and item is its own layer, so a split-layer export gives each its own sheet.

How it was built

Step by step

  1. Tileset and levelGrass, stone, water, spikes, a ? block, torches; water and torches animate by swapping tiles.
  2. CharactersHero, enemies, items and boss, each built step by step.
  3. FinaleThe video assembles one scene from the real exports, and says so.

How it was checked

  • Every build step matches the design exactly.
  • SpriteRelay's own audits: no animation warnings, no empty or duplicate frames.

Labels and honesty notes

  • The episode 5 finale scene is assembled by the video from the real exports, and labelled as such.

Do this with your own sprites

Every build here was made through SpriteRelay CLI.

Your assistant inspects, patches, previews and exports real .aseprite files, and nothing reaches your project until you commit.
