Build 05 · The isometric world

An isometric pixel art world on a real Aseprite tilemap

First a tile kit on a small island, then a whole continent: beaches, forests, a highland lake whose river drops over a waterfall, roads with stairs and a bridge, a village, a castle and a port.

What makes it work

Inside the file

  • Aseprite tilemaps are square, so the 32×16 diamonds sit on a 16×8 quarter grid.
  • The terrain is a real Aseprite tileset painted with set_tile_cells, and stays editable.
  • Water shimmers and the waterfall falls by swapping tiles between frames.

How it was built

Step by step

  1. Tile kitAn 18×18-diamond island with every piece: water, beach, grass, farmland, roads, cliffs, a waterfall.
  2. Generate the continentLayered noise, a river that runs downhill, roads that cross cliffs only by stairs.
  3. Paint the tilemapCut into 16×8 cells, de-duplicated into a tileset, painted onto a tilemap layer.

How it was checked

  • Every build step matches the design exactly.
  • The flyover camera moves over the real exported frames and never draws the world itself.

Do this with your own sprites

Every build here was made through SpriteRelay CLI.

Your assistant inspects, patches, previews and exports real .aseprite files, and nothing reaches your project until you commit.
